“They had no politicians and sang at their ease, they weren’t the human race” emphasises on Hitler’s anti-Semitic policy which curbed German Jew’s, the nationality and religion of the narrator, freedom. The contrasting treatment of animals enhances isolation and marginalisation andĪ powerful line, “if we let them in, they will steal our daily bread’, particularly relevant as although this poem is more than 75 years old, the speakers struggle of marginalisation and being an outcast resonates with refugees today and how there are still wealthy countries who actively fighting to exclude them in the fear their ‘bread’ will be stolen. ‘Refugee Blues’ emphasises the contrast between the beauty of the natural world and the nefariousness which governments impose on citizens. The last two lines of the poem “Was he free? Was he happy? The question is absurd: Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard” is juxtaposition in regards to the overall tone of the poem which Irony and satirical context throughout the entirety of the poem depicts a one-sided nature of society and government through the ‘perfect citizen’. My visual representation illustrates a person evolving into a barcode representing the inadvertent result of conformality controlled by faceless the man above who is slightly faded to reflect the totalitarian government’s ambiguity. This displays the praise brought upon conformity as well as the making of a totalitarianism state where personal values and identity are tarnished. ‘The Unknown Citizen’ illustrates a society of brainwashed souls conforming to a general standard set by a faceless bureaucracy, “saint” a metaphoric term used to describe the unknown man in line four is not to be taken literally. “Poetry Makes Nothing Happen” by Julia Alvarez, reinforced and gave me an insight into what poetry really is and how it can really change anything, and the purpose, poets like Julia Alvarez write their amazing work.Poetry itself does not make something happen, though, Auden’s subliminal power to inspire his audience to perceive with his views on the inflicting change among society. In this case, poetry allows an individual to flex and have an open mind, entertain themselves, and expand their view enormously. Lastly, the title “Poetry Makes Nothing Happen” specifically caught my attention, and it left me with a question of what can poetry really do?. Additionally, I read poetry as a way to enjoy and relax myself, drawing an image of the message the author is trying to present to me and how I deeply feel in receiving that message As for example, Mike who used poetry as a way to comfort himself, as he was receiving a message but also for a relaxed comfort feeling, and didnt feel no shame for listening to poetry on his drive home from work. Motivational and inspirational poetry, is my top favorite, because poets like Robert Frost revealed a message in how you should make a decision for yourself not for others. Next, this poem is relatable to me because, poetry has taught me much things like how I should elaborate on my thinking and making a decision. Listening to poetry was the only thing that kept Mike awake and relaxed on his way home, and that helped him feel less lonely than he usually feels. For instance, Mike Holmquist being one of the characters, who took a message of a poem he was listening to on his way home from work. In this poem characters were using poems as a way to help themselves. The way poetry gave me different perspectives of life is, how the author self-expresses his or her feelings and shares in their work. I’ve learned to feel or imagine something from different perspectives as it grabs my attention and expands what the meaning of the message the poem is trying to communicate.įirst, reading “Poetry Makes Nothing Happen”, gave me the perspective that poetry can inspire you, cheer you up, give you hope or even encourage you. Poetry teaches me to think with an open mind. Reading poetry was something I did occasionally, not something I did everyday, but when I was in high school I started reading poetry. “Poetry Makes Nothing Happen” By Julia Alvarez, it changed my perspective on poetry, as for instance, in the way I think of a future goal I may have. The rhythm of the poem delivers a message, which expresses feelings reflecting your mood, and thoughts. Poetry is lyrical, in which it interprets life and the special style of it.
